Why do some people snore?
Snoring is the result of your airway narrowing causing
air to be inhaled at an increased speed and pressure.
This makes the tissues in the back of your mouth vibrate
and produces the snoring sound. Heavy, loud snoring
can be a sign of a more serious health problem and you
or your companion may have a breathing disorder known
as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder in which your breathing
stops repeatedly while you sleep. These cessation in
breathing episodes are called apneas. Apnea events last
for as long as 10-30 seconds and may happen hundreds
of times per night. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is
the most common type. It happens when the airway is
blocked during sleep. The blockage is usually caused
by relaxed throat muscles, soft tissue, a narrow airway,
a large tongue, or extra fatty tissue.
Is Sleep Apnea common?
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimates that
18 million Americans have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
with 80-90 percent being undiagnosed and untreated.
Untreated sleep apnea is serious. It increases your
risk for stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart
attack, obesity and depression. Sleep apnea also contributes
to learning and memory problems, poor job performance,
irritability, decreased libido and a high risk for car
accidents.
How do I know if I have Sleep Apnea?
OSA is diagnosed through an overnight sleep study, known
as a polysomnography, performed by a sleep physician
at a sleep center. The study will measure your Apnea-Hypopnea
Index (AHI) which is the average number of partial and
complete breaks in your breathing that occur per hour
of sleep. Your level of sleep apnea is based on AHI
and will help determine which treatment is best for
you.
